Talam Venkateswara Rao (b 1946)
Dr. T. V. Rao is currently Chairman, T VRLS. He was a Professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad between 1973 and 1994 and a Visiting or Adjunct Professor since then until recently. He also served as a member of the IIMA Society and the Board of Governors.
Dr. Rao along with Dr. Udai Pareek are credited to have conceptualized and initiated the concept of Human Resources Development and HR a function in the corporate sector in 1974-75. L&T was the first to start in mid seventies with their help. Dr. Rao has also worked as L&T Professor of HRD at XLRI, Jamshedpur during 1983-85. Dr. Rao is the Founder and First President of the National HRD Network, and the First Honorary Director of the Academy of HRD, India. Dr. Rao was a Visiting Faculty at the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad and a HRD Advisor to the Reserve Bank of India. Dr Rao assisted the Administrative Reforms Commission in reviewing the personnel management practices for civil services, and also served as member of the HRM Review Committee of Public Sector Banks set up by the Ministry of Finance in 2009-2010. Dr. Rao worked as a short-term consultant to UNESCO, Bangkok; USAID Indonesia for the Ministry of Health, Indonesia: NERDA, Malaysia; FAO Rome; and the Commonwealth Secretariat, London. Dr. Rao’s Leadership Development methodology started in mid-eighties using what is later termed in the USA as 360 Degree Feedback. And HRD audit methodology leading to HRD Score card 2500 are first of its kind in this part of the world.
Dr. Rao has authored or coauthored or edited by now around sixty books dealing with Organizational Behavior, HRD, Education Management, Health and Population Management, Entrepreneurship Development etc. Dr. Rao’s most recent publications include: Managers who Make a Difference (IIMA Books, Random House); Hurconomics: for Talent Management (Pearson Education, 2011); Nurturing Institutional Excellence: Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. (edited by Vijaya Sherry Chand and T. V. Rao, MacMillan India, 2011) and 100 Managers in Action (Tata McGraw-Hill, 2012).
Dr. Rao received many awards for his contributions in HRD including life Time Achievement Awards from different agencies. In 2015 the Association of Indian Management Schools Conferred on him the title of Ravi Matthai Fellow” of AIIMS for his contributions to Management. In 2016, Asia OD Network conferred Life Time achievement award in a conference held at Shanghai. In 2019 The Asia Pacific Federation of Human Resources conferred on him Asia Pacific HR Professional of the year 2019 at a function held at Taipei, Taiwan and the Indian Academy of Management conferred Life Time Achievement Award in 2020 January.
